New study shows bird–turbine collision risks far lower than assumed
A new study commissioned by Skyborn Renewables and partners in the German Offshore Wind Association (BWO - Bundesverband Windenergie Offshore e.V.) has delivered important insights into how migratory birds interact with wind farms.

- New study finds bird–turbine collision risk significantly lower than previously assumed.
- Research shows over 99.8% avoidance rate as migratory birds rarely enter turbine rotor areas.
- Findings demonstrate that offshore wind energy and bird protection can successfully coexist.
Using advanced bird radar and AI-enabled cameras over 1.5 years at a coastal site in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the research found:
- Avoidance rates above 99.8% – meaning birds rarely enter turbine rotor areas.
- No link between migration intensity and collisions – even during peak nocturnal migration.
These findings provide robust, data-driven evidence that wind energy and bird protection can coexist.
Skyborn is proud to have initiated, organised and co-financed the study together with BWO partners. Our colleague Freerk Nanninga, Senior Permit Manager & Environmental Specialist at Skyborn, led the project steering committee.
Building on this work, Skyborn will deploy an even more advanced monitoring system at our Gennaker offshore wind project from 2027.
